Introduction
For my website, I am focusing on Hopsin. The reason why I chose to do this website about Hopsin is because I am a fan of Horrorcore rap and I am a fan of his work. I could have chose rappers such as King Gordy, Tech N9ne, or even Bizarre, but it would be hard for me to explain why these rappers matter in Black Popular Culture. It's great to focus on an independent or an underground rapper because it gives me an opportunity to introduce the class to a rapper who is least known on the radio and video.
Why does he matter in black pop culture?
According to Steward Hall's "What is the Black in Black Popular Culture", Hall says that he is interested in cultural differences and that "those that can make a
difference and can shift the dispositions of power". With that being said in mind, why does Hopsin matter in Black Popular Culture? Is because of his white contacts that he wears on his shows or his meanings in his music? Or perhaps it is because of characteristics that stand out from most rappers?
The real reason why Hopsin matters in Black Popular Culture is because he is all about realness. While rappers such as Common, Lupe Fiasco, and Kendrick Lamar talk about the problems that are going on in society and black issues, they all take the same "wake up America/Black America" approach and hidden messages. Hopsin on the other hand, tells it like it is straight to the point. Sure he has told stories in his music like some rappers do, but he does not give out hidden messages in his songs. He fuses conscience rap with horrorcore rap to provide shock value when he tell these stories.
