Horrorcore Rap
Horrorcore rap is hip hop with horror-related themes such as satanism, exorcism, necrophilia, murder, suicide, and self-harm. It was originated in the 1980s by the Geto Boyz with their song from the Making Trouble album called Assassins. Many rappers such as Esham, Insane Poetry, and Ganksta NIP used horror-related themes in their music, which contributes to the horrorcore genre. The term "Horrorcore" was coined in 1994 by Russell Simmons when he used two rap groups (Flatlinerz and Gravediggaz) to release their own horrorcore albums: Gravediggaz's 1994 album 6 Feet Deep (Niggamortis in the European Version) and Flatlinerz's 1994 album U.S.A. (Under Satan's Authority). At the time, Horrorcore was suppose to be the next big thing to Gangsta Rap, but it failed.
Horrorcore is not popular with the mainstream world, but some artists and groups in that category such as Tech N9ne, Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, and Three 6 Mafia gained mainstream success. The genre is very popular with the internet and underground culture and is currently spreading through Europe and Australia.
With Horrorcore, Hopsin uses type of genre as shock value to give his listeners the dark side of the mirror (in other words, he gives his listeners the morbid side of reality) and also just for his own form of entertainment. Examples would be "Sexy Cyber" (A song about the dangers of online dating), "I'm Not Crazy", "Kill Her", and "Blood Energy Potion".
